11/21/2023 0 Comments Utopia band discography![]() All I had was a an acoustic and electric guitar and tons of free time when not in school. My family had just relocated to Memphis when I was 13 and I had no friends, no internet, no cable. That left an indelible impression my life and how I viewed music and art was profoundly, forever changed. I think I was 16.įew months after I graduated HS, a girl I knew brought over a FZ mix tape cassette called Assorted Obscenities that one of her older brothers had made, along with some. I thought "wow, I didn't know he was wierd, lol. Seemed a bit of a novelty to me at the time, had a chuckle or two. Later, a guy I knew from High School brought over a copy of Man from Utopia he'd checked out from a public library. Couple of the guys at his place who had heard it were reciting lyrics to Yellow Snow. If this even qualifies as "exposure", my first exposure to Frank was my friend had an 8-track tape of Apostrophe but no working player to listen to it on. I was curious but I hadn't heard a note of his music. Reminded me a lot of Tony Iommi with the hair and the SG. Looked like a groovy rock and roll dude to me. I'd heard his name and seen his picture in magazines and whatnot. I also caught a tribute band with Napoleon Murphy Brock and a couple of other alumni I started listening to all the album chronologically after that and had a chance to see Dweezil play Zappa plays Zappa which was nice. But I did eventually listen to my prof and purchased "The Best Band." and I grew to love the album (it's my favourite Zappa band).įinally I heard "We're only in it." and that did it for me. I didn't listen to his advice and bought a compilation album "Strictly Commercial" which I didn't like. He gave me a trigger warning saying that Zappa could sometimes be " a little bit in your face". Since it was alphabetical, of course I stumbled onto "Zappa" and I was immediately struck by his powerful stare on one of his album covers (I vaguely remember seeing the cover of Joe's Garage and possibly apostrophe) I was also intrigued because he looked like he could be one of my relatives.įast forward a couple of years and I heard Valley Girl which used to play on the local alternative rock station and I thought it was pretty funny.įast forward some more years and I walk into a college prof's office and he's got this poster of Frank! I asked him about it and he recommended "The best band." album.
